The I.N.S.E.C.T. Summercamp is an interdisciplinary gathering that brings together design researchers, artists, architects, ecologists, biologists, biotremologists, and others to form the I.N.S.E.C.T. Collective. Held annually, the Summercamp serves as a critical platform for developing and exchanging innovative methodologies that respond to evolving scholarly practices and global ecological challenges.
The most recent Summercamp focused on the acoustic environments of insects. Through field recordings, embodiment practices, and deep listening techniques, participants explored biotremology, bioacoustics, soundscapes, and modes of insect communication. As part of this exploration, we engaged in the construction of custom instruments to deepen our understanding of sound's material and technical dimensions—merging scientific inquiry with artistic expression.
In collaboration with artist and researcher Kristine Diekman, I co-developed an instrument focused on the diverse acoustic patterns of leafhoppers. Using conductive thread and a Raspberry Pi, our instrument was created to emphasize the rich diversity of vibrational sound patterns produced by different leafhopper species, and to explore the varied communicative purposes these signals serve.
